The Lincoln Project exists to:

  • In the tradition of Abraham Lincoln, provide services and materials that will benefit others and support the mission of The Lincoln Project

Who

The Lincoln Project was founded by Christopher Small in 2003; he has portrayed Mr. Lincoln since 1997. Chris has a graduate degree in Communication, with a specialty in Interpretation & Performance Studies, and has directed Playback Theatre, Bibliodrama, and Boal-based Sociodrama. He has served over the years as a high school history teacher, a university lecturer, and a minister. Chris is or has been a member and/or officer of several national and local associations focused on the study and portrayal of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era, the preservation of history and living history, and in communications and academic honors.

Highlights

  • Work on new book about the life and values of Abraham Lincoln (2020/21)
  • 150th Anniversary of the 1865 Lincoln-Johnson Inauguration: a partnership event with the National Park Service, United States Postal Service, & Andrew Johnson Heritage Association (March 2015)
  • "Lincoln & Johnson: The Winning Ticket of 1864" - unique live program with the National Park Service to mark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's reelection (November 2014)
  • "War in Heaven, War on Earth" - Production of a sesquicentennial full-length documentary film on the birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church during the American Civil War (production 2012-2013, released 2014)
  • 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address: developed our popular program "Lincoln at Gettysburg" for its first major presentation in Garden Grove, CA (2013)
  • Organizer & Host of the 2011 Association of Lincoln Presenters Annual National Convention
  • Produced the children’s book "Abraham Lincoln Puts On His Hat" (2010)
  • "Lincoln and Johnson on Amnesty and Reconstruction" project with the National Park Service (2008-2010)
  • "Lincoln at the Movies: An IPS Exploration of the Structure and Meaning of Lincoln Portrayals in Film From the Early 1900s to Present," TC Arts Outreach Cicero Lecture Series (2009)
  • Produced the narrative films "Lincoln & Emancipation" and "Abraham Lincoln’s Faith" (2009)
  • Organized the academic symposium "Lincoln’s Living Legacy: 200 Years of Interpretation" in conjunction with Tusculum College (2009)
  • Lincoln Bicentennial Stamps Commemorative Event and Postal Cancellation in conjunction with the United States Postal Service (2009)
  • "Performance Development: Living Historiography from Scratch" Central States Communication Association, Kansas City (2005)
  • "Addressing Gettysburg: A Presenter Ethnography," Eastern Michigan University (2004)
